Matthew English(born 14 November 1997) is an English professionalrugby leaguefootballer who plays as apropforward for theHuddersfield Giantsin theSuper Leagueand theEngland Knightsat international level.

He has spent time on loan fromHuddersfieldat theDewsbury Ramsin theChampionshipand at theCastleford Tigersin theSuper League.

Playing career

Huddersfield Giants

English is a product of theHuddersfield Giants' academy system and is nicknamed 'the Polar Bear'.[3][4]

On 23 April 2017, he made his first team debut for Huddersfield against theSwinton Lionsin theChallenge Cup.[5]

On 28 May 2022, English played for Huddersfield in their2022 Challenge Cup finalloss against theWigan Warriors.[6]

English played 19 games for Huddersfield in the2023 Super League seasonas the club finished ninth on the table and missed the playoffs.[7] English played 14 matches for Huddersfield in the 2024 Super League season which saw the club finish 9th on the table.[8]

Castleford Tigers (loan)

On 12 June 2024, it was announced that English would sign for theCastleford Tigersin theSuper Leagueon loan.[9]He joined on an initial two-week deal, rolling week to week thereafter.[10]He made four appearances for the Tigers, with head coachCraig Lingardexpressing the club's desire to keep him as long as possible.[11][12]Huddersfield announced his recall on 15 July.[13]

He represented England academy on tour to Australia[4]

In 2019 Matty was called into theEngland Knightssquad along with 3 other Giants players.[14]

In 2019 he was selected for theEngland KnightsagainstJamaicaatHeadingley Rugby Stadium.[15]
