Mayabunderis a town and atehsilin the northern part ofMiddle Andaman Island,Andaman Archipelago,India.The name is also spelledMaya BunderorMaya Bandar.As of 2001, the county had 23,912 inhabitants, of which 3182 were in the town.[1]It was settled in theBritishcolonial period by immigrants fromMyanmarand ex-convicts fromMainland India.

Administratively, Mayabunder is the headquarters of theNorth and Middle Andaman district,which is part of theAndaman and Nicobar Islandsterritory.[2]

Geography

Mayabunder is linked withPort Blairby theAndaman Trunk Road(242 km) and by ferry (136 km).[3]

Economy and facilities

Mayabunder is a waystation for several tourist attractions, such as mangrove linedtidal creeks,the beach atAves Island (Andaman and Nicobar Islands)(30 minutes by boat), andKaramatang Beach(13 km), asea turtlenesting ground.Port Blairand Mayabunder are the only ports that can harbour passenger ships from mainland India.

Mayabunder has a publiccollegenamedMahatma Gandhi Government College.

On 24 December 2012,Indian Coast GuardStation Mayabunder, the first CG Station in the NorthAndaman Islandswas commissioned by the Defence Secretary, ShriShashi Kant Sharma.
