Meeting of the Watersis the ninthEPby Americanexperimental popbandAnimal Collective, released first onRecord Store Day,April 22, 2017.[4]It is the second extended play released by the band in 2017. The EP was recorded live on location in theAmazon Rainforest. It is notable for containing many recordings of animal calls and some sounds being recorded underwater, as well as being documented in theVicelandseriesEarth Works.[5]This is the band's first release to feature onlyAvey Tare(David Portner) andGeologist(Brian Weitz) and currently the only to feature this particular lineup of the collective.[3]

In 2020, the band announced plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the EP toCultural Survival,an indigenous rights charity. As the EP features recorded samples of music performed by the Tatuyo tribe in Brazil, a portion of the profits were directed to IDESAM [The Institute for the Conservation and Sustainable Development of the Amazon] upon its release forRecord Store Day.In a newsletter to fans, they wrote: "As we were guests in their [the Tatuyo tribe's] world, we feel it is only right to continue to show our gratitude."[6]

Musical style

[edit]

Regarding the one-time duo's aesthetic,Pitchfork's Stuart Berman felt the EP "takesCampfire Songsoff-the-cuff, on the spot ethos and exports it to aBrazilian rainforest",referencing the group's 2003 record under the nameCampfire Songs. The first track, "Blue Noses", he described as a "blissed-outpsych-folkmeditation. "Later in the review, he noted" Selection of a Place (Rio Negro Version) "as" alo-filove song. "[3]

Sputnikmusic's Veta also echoed comparisons toCampfire Songs, with "Blue Noses" noted as a "throwback" to that record while being "peppered withpsychedelic ambiencethat teases the ear. "[2]
