Melatonin receptor type 1Ais aproteinthat in humans is encoded by theMTNR1Agene.[5][6]

Function[edit]

This gene encodes the MT1protein,one of two high-affinity forms of a receptor formelatonin, the primary hormone secreted by thepineal gland. This receptor is a G protein-coupled, 7-transmembrane receptor that is responsible for melatonin effects on mammaliancircadian rhythmand reproductive alterations affected by day length. The receptor is anintegral membrane proteinthat is readily detectable and localized to two specific regions of the brain. Thehypothalamicsuprachiasmatic nucleusappears to be involved in circadian rhythm while thehypophysialpars tuberalismay be responsible for thereproductiveeffects of melatonin.[6]

Ligands[edit]

  1. Melatonin– full agonist
  2. Afobazole– agonist
  3. Agomelatine– agonist
