Trackeris afile indexing and searchframework forLinuxand otherUnix-likesystems. It is written in theCprogramming language.

Tracker has been adopted by theGNOMEdesktop environmentand is heavily integrated intoGNOME ShellandGNOME Files.

At its core, Tracker is a general-purposeSPARQL-based database; although it is developed together with the file indexer component, it may be used to store or access any kind of data that follows the RDF data model (such as querying Wikidata).

One of the developers of theConduitapplication has suggested using Tracker to create "a metadata-enabled GNOME",[2]similar to usingStrigias an indexer for a metadata framework inKDE Software Compilation 4.
