Miami is about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of thePhilmont Scout Ranchbase camp, but is only about 4 miles (6.4 km) from theRayado campsite.
Miami was named by its founders afterMiami, Ohioand was originally calledMiami Ranch.[3]Miami Lake, a private man-made reservoir,[4]located just off State Road 21, six miles (10 km) due west of the community, was part of the Miami Project of the Farmers Development Company which purchased 20,000 acres (81 km2) in the area in 1906.[5][6]
