Michael George Ripper(27 January 1913 – 28 June 2000)[1]was an Englishcharacter actor.

Career[edit]

He began his film career inquota quickiesin the 1930s and until the late 1950s was virtually unknown; he was seldom credited.[1]Along withMichael Goughhe played one of the two murderers inLaurence Olivier's film version ofRichard III(1955).[2]

Ripper became a mainstay inHammer Film Productionsplaying supporting character roles: coachmen, peasants, tavern keepers, pirates and sidekicks.[3]Appearing in more of the company's films than any other performer, these includedThe Camp on Blood Island(1958),The Revenge of Frankenstein(1958),The Mummy(1959),The Brides of Dracula(1960),Captain Clegg(1962),The Scarlet Blade(1963),The Reptile(1966),The Plague of the Zombies(1966) andThe Mummy's Shroud(1967).[1][4]

Some of his parts were little better than glorified bits (as inThe Curse of the Werewolf), but his penultimate role forHammer Filmswas a significant supporting part as a landlord inScars of Draculain 1970.[5](His last Hammer role was as a railway worker in the atypical comedyThat's Your Funeraltwo years later.)[6]

He is also well remembered for his role as a jockey/horse trainer inThe Belles of St. Trinian'sand the liftman in the next three of theSt. Trinian'scomedies, and on television for his role as Thomas the chauffeur in the BBC comedyButterflies(1978–83) and as Burke, one of the two criminals in the youth television seriesFreewheelers(1968–71).[7][1]

His other TV roles include Mr Shepherd, Aunt Sally's owner, inWorzel Gummidge,a judge in "Voice in The Night", a 1958 episode ofThe Adventures of William Tell,in a 1960 episode ofDanger Manentitled "The Lovers" in the role of Miguel Torres, as well as in the 1962 episode entitled "The Island" as Kane, Phunkey inThe Pickwick Papers(1985) and the Drones Porter inJeeves and Wooster(1990–91).[4][8]
