Midland Mallis an enclosedshopping mallservingMidland, Michigan,United States. Opened in 1991, the mall's anchor stores areTarget,Hobby Lobby,Barnes & Noble,Dunham's Sports,andPlanet Fitness.A fourth anchor store spot, once occupied bySears,is occupied by MyMichigan Health System and is non-commercial. The mall was owned and managed by theKohan Retail Investment Groupuntil 2023 when local businessman Jordan Dice purchased it at auction.
History
[edit]Richard E. Jacobsgroup built the Midland Mall, which was originally anchored byJ. C. Penney,Elder-Beerman,Target,andSears.[1]
Barnes & Nobleopened in the JCPenney wing in 2003.[2]ASteve & Barry'sstore was added in the same wing and closed in 2008.[3]The space becameDunham's Sportsin 2011.[4]
Although Midland Mall is the smallest of the three malls in theTri-Cities(which also comprisesBay CityandSaginaw), it also had the lowest vacancy rate of the three.[5]The mall filled several vacancies in 2007 by addingJourneys,aVanityclothing store and two eateries.[6]All of these tenants have since closed. TheElder-Beermanstore was renamedYounkersin 2012.[7]Shoe Showopened a Shoe Dept. Encore store next to Younkers in mid-2015.[8]Sears closed in July 2016.[9]On March 17, 2017, it was announced that JCPenney would also be closing as part of a plan to close 138 stores nationwide. The store closed on July 31, 2017.[10]On April 18, 2018, it was announced that Younkers' parent companyThe Bon-Tonwould be going out of business. The store closed on August 31, 2018, leaving Target as the only anchor left.[11]
Despite the fact that chain stores continue to leave the mall, businesses are still opening at Midland Mall.[12]In 2020, Fantastic Finds, a resale store, opened in the former Younkers space.[13]In addition,Planet Fitnessmoved their existing Midland location to the former JCPenney in 2020.[14]After Fantastic Finds moved into a smaller space in 2022, its anchor space was confirmed to undergo conversion to aHobby Lobby.[15]
