Michael U. Villarreal(born August 19, 1971 in San Antonio) is an American state politician who served as a member of theTexas House of Representativesfrom a district centered in north centralSan Antonio.Villarreal served as Chair of the House Committee on Investments and Financial Services and was a member of the House Committee on Public Education.[2]ADemocratwho served eight terms, Villarreal previously worked for San Antonio's SAMCO Capitol Markets, specializing in municipal finance.[3]

Villarrea is a graduate of Central Catholic High School inSan Antonio,Texas. He holds an undergraduate economics degree fromTexas A&M Universityand later studied economics atMassachusetts Institute of TechnologyandHarvard University.He holds aMasters of Public PolicyfromHarvard Kennedy School.He has aDoctor of Philosophyin public affairs at theLyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs.[4][5]

Villarreal was named as one of Texas' best legislators byTexas Monthlyand has been commended by the localSierra Clubfor his legislative work to protect the environment.[6]

Villarreal resigned his seat in the State House in January 2015 to run forMayor of San Antonioin the2015 mayoral election.[7]Villarreal came in third and did not qualify for the runoff.[citation needed]
