Orio al Serio International Airport,[2]also styled asMilan Bergamo Airportfor commercial purposes,[3][4](IATA:BGY,ICAO:LIME) is thethird-busiestinternational airportin Italy.[1] The airport is also officially calledIl Caravaggio International Airportafter the Baroque painterMichelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio,who originally hailed from the nearby town ofCaravaggio.[5]

The airport is located inOrio al Serio,3.7 km (2.3 mi) southeast ofBergamoand 45 km (28 mi) northeast ofMilan.The airport is part of the airport network of theMilan metropolitan area,alongsideMalpensa AirportandLinate Airport.The airport served almost 13 million passengers in 2018 and is one ofRyanair's three largest operating bases, along withDublin AirportandLondon Stansted Airport.[6]

Together with Malpensa Airport and Linate Airport, it forms the Milan airport system with 42.2 million passengers in 2022, the largest airport system in Italy by number of passengers.[7]

Overview

The airport is managed by SACBO, a company partially owned bySEA – Aeroporti di Milano,the operator of Linate and Malpensa airports. SEA, the company that runs the latter two airports, also holds a 31% stake in SACBO.[8] The airport has one passenger terminal and two jet-bridge gates.[citation needed]

The terminal is split into two zones, A (Gates A1-A15) and B (Gates B1-B5). Gates A13 and B5 are equipped with boarding bridges; the remaining gates are remote gates.

In March 2021,DHL Aviationannounced plans to relocate their hub from Bergamo toMilan Malpensa AirportwhereDHLopened new logistics facilities.[9]In early 2022, DHL confirmed the end of all operations at Bergamo.[10]

Accidents and incidents

  • On 30 October 2005, Trade Air Flight 729 crashed nearBergamo,Italy,shortly after taking off in poor weather. The flight was a night-time cargo flight from Bergamo toZagreboperated by aLet L-410 Turboletwith theregistration9A-BTA. All three people on board, two pilots and a passenger, were killed.[53]
  • On 5 August 2016, during the night,Boeing 737-476 (SF) registered HA-FAX, operated byASL Airlines Hungary,overshot while landingon runway 28 in Bergamo and came to a stop on a parking lot and on a secondary highway lane that is around the airport, 300 m (980 ft) from the runway end. No one was injured, but some cars were destroyed and the plane sustained substantial damages. The plane was removed from the street the same day. The air traffic remained unvaried without delays.[54]

Bus

There are several public transportation links to and from downtownMilan,including express coaches.[55]There are further connections to/from Bergamo city center,Arezzo,Bologna,Brescia,Monza,Turin,Malpensa Airport,andMilan Trade Exhibition Center,Parma,Torino,andVerona.

Railway

While a railway station is currently being built at Bergamo airport, scheduled to open in 2026,[56]the current nearest railway station isBergamo railway station,3.5 miles (5.6 km) away. There is no official shuttle between the airport and the railway station. A bus service operated by ATB connects to the airport, about 10 minutes from the train station.[57]
