Minamoto no Yukiie

Minamoto no Yukiie(Nguyên hành gia,died June 1, 1186)was the brother ofMinamoto no Yoshitomo,and one of the commanders of theMinamotoforces in theGenpei Warat the end of theHeian periodof Japanese history.

In 1181, he was defeated at theBattle of SunomatagawabyTaira no Shigehira.[1]After the humiliation, he fled again to Yahagigawa bridge, where he tried destroying it. However, theTairacaught up and fought back, destroying his forces in theBattle of Yahagigawa.However, the pursuit was called off when theTairaleader,Tomomori,got sick.[2]

Yukiie was then able to joinMinamoto no Yoshinakain besieging the capital city in the summer of 1183.Taira no Munemoriwas forced to flee with the young emperor while the cloistered emperor joined Yoshinaka.[1]: 293–294 

For a time, Yukiie plotted withMinamoto no YoshinakaagainstYoritomo,the head of the clan. But whenYoshinakasuggested kidnapping the cloisteredEmperor Go-Shirakawa,Yukiie betrayed him, revealing his plan toEmperor Go-Shirakawa,who in turn revealed it toYoritomo.[1]: 296 

Yukiie, former Governor ofBizen,then allied himself withMinamoto no Yoshitsune,under imperial orders, against Yoritomo.[3]

Yukiie was captured and killed in 1186, on orders from Yoritomo.[1]: 325
