Mitooma Districtis adistrictinWestern Uganda.It is named after its main municipal, administrative and commercial center,Mitooma.

Location

Mitooma District is bordered byBushenyi Districtto the north,Sheema Districtto the east,Ntungamo Districtto the south, andRukungiri Districtto the west.Mitooma,where the district headquarters are located is located some 25 kilometres (16 mi), by road, southwest ofBushenyi,the nearest large town.[1]This location lies approximately 85 kilometres (53 mi), by road, west ofMbarara,the largest city inAnkole sub-region.[2]The coordinates of the district are:00 36S, 30 00E.

Overview

The district was created by qn Act of Parliament and became functional on 1 July 2010.[3]Previously, the district used to beRuhinda CountyinBushenyi District.Mitooma district is part ofAnkole sub-region.The sub-region, which is coterminous with theAnkoleKingdom, comprises the following districts: 1.Buhweju District2.Bushenyi District3.Ibanda District4.Isingiro District5.Kiruhura District6. Mitooma District 7.Ntungamo District8.Rubirizi Districtand 9.Sheema District.The sub-region was home to an estimated 2.2 million people, according to the 2002 national census.

Population

In 1991, the national population census estimated the district population at about 134,300. In 2002, the national census estimated the population of the district at about 160,800. In 2012, the population of Mitooma District was estimated at approximately 196,300.[4]
