Geography
[edit]TheSunshine Motorwaypasses through the locality from the north-west (Coolum Beach) to the south-west (Marcoola). TheDavid Low Waypasses through the locality from north-east (Yaroomba) to south-east (Marcoola).[4]
The mountain Mount Coolum (from which the suburb takes its name) is in the centre of the locality (26°33′41″S153°05′03″E/ 26.5615°S 153.0841°E). Historically the mountain was known asHalf Way Lump.[3]It is 207 metres (679 ft) above sea level. The mountain is protected within theMount Coolum National Park.[5][4]
There is a sandy beach along theCoral Seacoast.[4]
History
[edit]The nameCoolumderives fromKabi wordgulumorkulummeaningwithoutorwanting,probably referring to the Aboriginal legend of the mountain's head being knocked off in a fight with Ninderry, with the head becomingMudjimba Island(26°36′53″S153°06′53″E/ 26.6147°S 153.1147°E).[2][6]
