Mount Kaweah(/kəˈw.ə/) is a mountain inCalifornia'sSequoia National Parkand forms part of theKaweah Peaks Ridge,a spur of theGreat Western Dividewhich extends south fromTriple Divide Peak.It has a summit elevation of 13,807 ft (4,208 m), the highest along theKaweah Peaks Ridge.It is the closest mountain withfoothillstoLos Angeles.

Name[edit]

The peak was named for theKaweah Riverwhich has its headwaters to the west of the Kaweah Peaks Ridge. The Kaweahs, however, drain into theKern River.[1]The Kaweah River was named for the Kawai (or Gā'wia) tribe, members of theYokuts people.The Yokuts were once known as Mariposa.[7]

A rarepine,theFoxtail Pine,lives on the southern slopes of Mount Kaweah.[8]
