Mujo Ulqinaku(bornMujo Cakuli;1896 – 7 April 1939) was anAlbaniansergeant of theRoyal Albanian Navy,known for his resistance on 7 April 1939 to theItalianforces during theItalian invasion of Albania.He was given thePeople's Hero of Albaniaaward posthumously.

Life

Mujo Ulqinaku was born in 1896 inUlcinj,in thePrincipality of Montenegro,now modernMontenegro,to a family of sailors and fishermen. In his teens he joined the commercial fleet inShkodërandLezhë.Later he served in the Albanian navy, based inDurrës,with the rank of sergeant, commanding the patrol boatTiranë.He was one of the few officers of theRoyal Albanian Armywho tried to stop theItalian invasion of Albania.Armed only with amachine gun,he was placed in the center of the defense line where he killed and wounded dozens of Italian soldiers.[1]He was killed by an artillery shell from an Italian warship in the last hour of the battle.[2]

Legacy

Ulqinaku is memorialized by a monument in front ofDurrës Castle.A grammar school in Durrës and streets inTiranaandPrishtinabear his name.[1]A documentary on his life and actions, "Lufton Mujo Ulqinaku"(English:Mujo Ulqinaku fights on), was released in 1979 byKinostudio Shqipëria e Re.[3]

Monument dedicated to Mujo in front of the walls of Durrës in 2008.
