Myra Marx Ferree(born October 10, 1949) is a former professor ofsociologyand director of the Center for German and European Studies at theUniversity of Wisconsin–Madison,[1]where she was also a member of theWomen's StudiesProgram. In 2005 she was aBerlin Prize Fellowat theAmerican Academy in Berlinand in 2004 the Maria-Jahoda Visiting professor at theRuhr University Bochum.[2][1]Ferree retired in 2018.[3]

Life

Ferree attendedHarvard Universitywhere she obtained a PhD in social psychology and social relations in 1976.[2]

She has written numerous articles aboutfeministorganizations and politics in the US, Germany and internationally, as well as aboutgender inequalityin families, the inclusion of gender insociological theoryand practice, and the intersections ofgenderwithraceandclass.Her current work focuses on comparisons between US and German feminist movements and gender policy developments since the 1960s as well as the development of feminist identities intransnational women's organizations.

She has been the recipient of theJessie BernardAward (sociology's highest honor for work in gender),[4]vice-president of theAmerican Sociological Associationand deputy editor of its leading journal,American Sociological Review,president ofSociologists for Women in Societyand recipient of its mentoring and feminist scholarship awards.[2]
