Nelson James Dunford(December 12, 1906 – September 7, 1986) was an Americanmathematician,known for his work infunctional analysis,namelyintegration of vector valued functions,ergodic theory,andlinear operators.TheDunford decomposition,Dunford–Pettis property,andDunford-Schwartz theorembear his name.

He studied mathematics at theUniversity of Chicagoand obtained his Ph.D. in 1936 atBrown UniversityunderJacob Tamarkin.He moved in 1939 toYale University,where he remained until his retirement in 1960.

In 1981, he was awarded jointly withJacob T. Schwartz,his Ph.D. student, the well-knownLeroy P. Steele Prizeof theAmerican Mathematical Societyfor the three-volume workLinear Operators.

Nelson Dunford was coeditor ofTransactions of the American Mathematical Society(1941–1945) andMathematical Surveys and Monographs(1945–1949).
