Nemeturii
TheNemeturii(Gaulish*Nemeturioi,'the inhabitants ofnemetons') orNemeturiwere aGallictribe dwelling in theAlpes Maritimaeduring theIron Age.
Name
[edit]They are mentioned asNemeturicaebyColumella(1st c. AD),[1]and asNemoturicaandNematuri(var.nemet-) byPliny(1st c. AD).[2][3]
The ethnic nameNemeturiiis a latinized form ofGaulish*Nemeturioi.It derives from the stemnemeto-, meaning 'sacred place, sanctuary',[3]and can be translated as 'the inhabitants of sacred places'.[4]
Geography
[edit]The Nemeturii dwelled in the upperVerdonorVarvalley.[5]Their territory was located east of theEguiturii,west of theEcdinii,north of theVergunniandNerusii,and south of theSavincatesandCaturiges.[6]
History
[edit]They are mentioned by Pliny the Elder as one of the Alpine tribes conquered by Rome in 16–15 BC, and whose name was engraved on theTropaeum Alpium.[7]
