Nesis aformer municipalityin the oldHedmarkcounty,Norway.The 177-square-kilometre (68 sq mi) municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 1964 when it became part ofRingsaker Municipality.Theadministrative centrewas the village ofTingneswhereNes Churchis located. The largest village in Nes wasStavsjøwhere theStavsjø Churchis located. The municipality included the Nes peninsula and the island ofHelgøyawhich both are surrounded by the large lakeMjøsa,Norway's largest lake.[3]

History

The parish ofNæswas established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (seeformannskapsdistriktlaw). During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of theSchei Committee.On 1 January 1964, the municipality of Nes (population: 4,184) was merged with the municipality ofFurnes(population: 7,288), the municipality ofRingsaker(population: 16,490), and the Hamarsberget and Vikersødegården areas of the municipality ofVang(population: 34) to create the new, largerRingsaker Municipality.[4]

Name

The municipality (originally theparish) is named after the oldNesfarm (Old Norse:Nes) since the firstNes Churchwas built there. The name is identical to the wordneswhich means "headland".[5]

Government

While it existed, this municipality was responsible forprimary education(through 10th grade), outpatienthealth services,senior citizenservices,unemployment,social services,zoning,economic development,and municipalroads.During its existence, this municipality was governed by amunicipal councilofdirectly electedrepresentatives. Themayorwasindirectly electedby a vote of the municipal council.[6]
