Nina Raine

Nina Raineis an Englishtheatre directorandplaywright,the only daughter ofCraig RaineandAnn Pasternak Slater,and a grand niece of the Russian novelistBoris Pasternak.

She graduated fromChrist Church, Oxfordin 1998 with a First inEnglish Literature.

Life and career[edit]

She won theChannel Four/Jerwood SpaceYoung Regional Theatre Director bursary in 2000 to train as a director at theRoyal Court Theatrewhere she assisted on a number of plays includingMy Zinc Bed,Mouth to Mouth,PresenceandFucking Games.

She has directed plays in several other theatres since then, includingUnprotectedat theLiverpool Everymanand theEdinburgh Festivalin 2006, for which she won theTMABest Director Award, andShadesbyAlia Banoas part of the Royal Court Theatre's Young Writers' Festival in 2009, as well asJumpybyApril De Angelisat theRoyal Courtand in theWest End.

Rabbit,Raine's first work as a dramatist, premiered at theOld Red Lion Theatrein London in the summer of 2006.[1]The play, which she directed, transferred to theTrafalgar Studioslater that autumn. She won both the 2006Evening Standard'sCharles WintourAward for Most Promising Playwright and the Most Promising Playwright Award at the 2006Critics' Circle Theatre Awards.Rabbitwas performed inNew York Cityin June 2007 at theBrits Off BroadwayFestival.[2]

Raine's second playTribeswas produced by theRoyal Courtin London, in October 2010, directed byRoger Michelland starringHarry Treadaway,Michelle TerryandStanley Townsend.[3]It had its Australian premiere at theMelbourne Theatre Companyin February 2012,[citation needed]and its North American premiere at New York City'sBarrow Street Theatre,also in 2012.[4]It was then produced byArtists Repertory Theatrein Portland in February 2015.[5]Tribesis about a deaf son who is raised in a dysfunctional, Jewish, hearing family (Raine is Jewish on her mother's side).[6]

Tiger Country,commissioned by Hampstead Theatre and produced byAlcove Entertainment,opened in January 2011.[7]

Raine directed and dramaturgedBehind the ImagebyAlia Bano,which premiered at the Royal Court's 2008 Rough Cuts Season. In 2013, she directedLonging,an adaptation of twoAnton Chekovstories by novelistWilliam Boyd.Her fourth play,Consent,premiered at theNational Theatrein April 2017, in a co-production withOut of Joint.Directed byRoger Michell,it starredAnna Maxwell Martin,Ben ChaplinandPip Carter.Her fifth play, Bach & Sons, is a work on the life ofJohann Sebastian Bachat theBridge Theatre,withSimon Russell Bealeas the composer in the premiere production.[8]
