Nisanur Erbil(born 22 April 2003) is a Turkishfencercompeting in thesabreevent.[1]She qualified for the2024 Summer Olympics.[2]

Early years

In the beginning, Erbil was interested in playing volleyball.[3]She was discovered forfencingby atalent scoutat age 13 in the school inSamsun.[4]She switched over to fencing because she wanted to perform a sport for individuals.[3]At her age of 14, she went alone toAnkara,and was admitted to the national fencing team three months later.[4]

2018

In 2018, Erbil participated at theYouth Olympicsheld inBuenos Aires,Argentina. She lost the first match in the Round of 16.[5]

She competed at the2018 Mediterranean GamesinTarragona,Spain, did not advance, however, to the quarter-finals.[5]

She won the bronze medal with her teammates in the cadet category and another bronze medal in the cadet individual event at the 2018 European Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships inSochi,Russia.[6]

2019

She won the silver medal at the 2019 FIE Junior Women’s Sabre World Cup inTashkent,Uzbekistan.[7]

At the 2019 European Cadets and Juniors Fencing Championships inFoggia,Italy, she captured the gold medal in the cadet category.[5][8]

2020

At the 2020 FIE World Cup inSegovia,Spain, she won the silver medal.[9][10]

2021

She captured the silver medal at the2021 World Cadets and Juniors Fencing ChampionshipsinCairo,Egypt.[4][11]

2022

She won the silver medal at the2022 European Cadets and Juniors Fencing ChampionshipsinNovis Sad,Serbia.[12]

2023

At the2023 Junior and Cadet Fencing World ChampionshipsinPlovdiv,Bulgaria, she took the bronze medal.[13]

She received the bronze medal at the 2023 Junior Women Sabre World Cup inSegovia,Spain.[14][15]

She competed unsuccessfully at the2023 European GamesinKraków,Poland.[16]

At the2023 World Fencing ChampionshipsinMilan,Italy, she did not advance further from the Round of 32.[17]

2024

She won the silver medal at the 2024 Fencing Grand Prix - Sabre inTunis,Tunisia.[18][19]She became so the first ever Turkish fencer to win a World Cup medal, and rose to number 21 in the world ranking list for senior women.[20]

She took the silver medal at theEuropean Fencing Olympic Qualification TournamentinDifferdange,Luxembourg.[21]She qualified to represent Turkey in the2024 OlympicsinParis,France.[2]

Personal life

Nisanur Erbil was born as the youngest of three children inSamsun,Turkey on 22 April 2003.[1][3]

She was schooled in Samsun, but completed the high school in Ankara after she moved there at age 14.[3]She is a student atBaşkent Universityin Ankara.[22]
