Nissum Bredningis the westernmostbredningin theLimfjordsituated betweenThyborøn Channel,through which thefjordis connected to theNorth Sea,andOddesundwithOddesund Bridge.Its size is around 200 km2and the depth is up to 6 meters. The length from east to west is about 24 km, and from southGjeller Oddeto the northRøjensø Oddeis about 10 kilometer; from here it continues asKrik Vig[da]to the north. To the west, atThyborønandHarboøre Tange[da],there are some sandbanks,FjordgrundandGåseholm.There is a navigable channelSælhundeholm Løb,going south from the channel alongAgger Tange,passingRønlandwith the chemical factoryCheminova,where it turns east.

At the south end of Harboøre Tange is the townHarboøre,from here the coast turns to the east and a bit south. Partly through the littleHygum Nor,there are several outlets fromFerring Sø,Søndervese,andNørrevese. Further east after the outlet ofHove Å,close to the coast, we findGjeller Sø,and east of thatGjeller OddeandFollup Oddeforms the entry passage toLem Vig,and in the south end of that is the city ofLemvig.

Nissum Bredning continues to the east to thecliffatToftum Bjerge,which is up to 35 meters high and has layers from three differentice ages.There is a large area with holiday homes atToftum,and from here the coast turns north toGrisetåoddeand Oddesund, where the bridge leads both the road and the railway over toThyholm,which southern part is calledSunddraget.

Nissum Bredning is part ofNatura 2000-Area 28 with Nissum Bredning,Skibsted FjordandAgerø.[1]It is aRamsar wetland,Special Area of Conservation,andSpecial Protection Area.

  • Both Harboøre- and Agger Tange was made aprotected areain 1984. – an area of total 2.400 hectares.
