Nocardia farcinicais a species ofbacteria, once thought to be associated withfarcy, and a member of the genusNocardia. This species is very similar in phenotype toNocardia asteroides,to the degree that some isolates ofN. asteroideswere later found to beNocardia farcinica.[3]

Pathogenicity

[edit]

N. farcinicamay be a causative agent ofnocardiosis[4]or of secondary infections in immunocompromised patients.[5]Strains of this species have been isolated from human brain abscesses.[6]

Genome

[edit]

N. farcinicacontains a 6 millionbase pairgenome with an averageGC contentof 70.8%. A sequenced strain, IFM 10152, is also known to contain two plasmids, pNF1 pNF2. The chromosome encodes 5,674 potential protein-codingopen reading frames. This genome may have undergone numerousgene duplicationevents as a result of adapting to new environments.[7]
