North Chungcheong Province(Korean:충청북도,Chungcheongbuk-do), also known asChungbuk,is aprovinceofSouth Korea.North Chungcheong has a population of 1,578,934 (2014) and has a geographic area of 7,433 km2(2,870 sq mi) located in theHoseoregion in the south-center of theKorean Peninsula.North Chungcheong borders the provinces ofGyeonggiandGangwonto the north,North Gyeongsangto the east,North Jeollato the south andSouth Chungcheong,Sejong Special Autonomous CityandDaejeon Metropolitan Cityto the west.
Cheongjuis the capital and largest city of North Chungcheong, with other major cities includingChungjuandJecheon.
North Chungcheong was established in 1896 from the province ofChungcheong,one of theEight Provinces of Korea,consisting of the northeastern half of the territory, and is South Korea's onlylandlockedprovince. North Chungcheong was known asChūsei-hoku Prefectureduring theJapanese Colonial Periodfrom 1910 and became part of South Korea following thedivision of Koreain 1945.
Geography[edit]
The province is part of theHoseoregion,and is bounded on the west byChungcheongnam-doprovince, on the north byGyeonggi-doandGangwon-doprovinces, on the south byJeollabuk-doprovince, and on the east byGyeongsangbuk-do.Chungcheongbuk-do is the only land-locked province inSouth Korea.The province is mostly mountainous, dominated by theNoryeong Mountainsto the north and theSobaek Mountainsto the east.

Resources[edit]
Agricultural products includesrice,barley,beans,andpotatoes,but the province specializes inginsengandtobacco.The tobacco was introduced from the US in 1912, transplanted fromVirginia.
There are mineral reserves ofgold,iron,coal,steatite,fluorite,andmolybdenum,as well asmarbleandlimestonein the northern part of the province. Silk weaving plays an important role.
Attractions[edit]
The main attractions in the province areMount Songni(1,058 metres [3,471 ft]) in theSobaekmountains and its national park.Beopjusa,the site of one of the oldest temples of Korea is located in this national park, as isGuinsa,the headquarters of theCheontaesect. There is another national park aroundMount Worak.

According to the 2015 census, 16.3% of the population followsBuddhismand 23.1% followChristianity(15.8%Protestantismand 7.3%Catholicism). 59.9% of the population is not religious and 0.7% of the population follows other religions.[5]
