Beizhili,formerlyromanizedasPei-chih-li,Pechili,Peichili,etc. and also known asNorthorNorthern ZhiliorChih-li,was ahistoricalprovinceof theMing Empire.Its capital wasBeijing,from which it is also sometimes known asBeijingorPeking Province.Beizhili mostly covered the area of theYuanprovinceofZhongshu—the "Central Administration" —and took its own name—Chinesefor "Northern Directly Administered Area" —from Beijing's status as the Ming'snational capitalfollowing theYongle Emperormove there fromNanjing,which oversawNanzhilior the Southern Directly Administered Area. In 1645, at the beginning of the Qing dynasty, the name of Beizhili was changed to Zhili. Under theRepublicandPeople's Republic of China,it was divided intoHebeiand theprovincial-level municipalitiesofBeijingandTianjin.(Small parts of what was once Beizhili were also ceded toHenanandShandong.)
