Ora(Chinese:Âu lạp;pinyin:Oūlā;stylised inall caps) is amarqueofbattery electric carsestablished in 2018 by ChineseautomakerGreat Wall Motor(GWM).
According to GWM, Ora stands for "open,reliable andalternative ", while also payinghomagetoLeonhard Euler,a notable Swiss mathematician whose surname is phonetically translated as "Oula" inMandarin Chinese.[1]
History

Great Wall Motorsannounced the creation of the new Ora brand, dedicated to a new line ofelectric cars,in May 2018.[2]At the time, the brand was launched with two initial models: thecrossoveriQ5 (lateriQ) andcity carR1 (laterBlack Cat).[3]Sales of theiQofficially kicked off the brand in August 2018.[4]The third Ora model R2 (later White Cat) was first previewed in June 2019,[5]with production officially beginning in July 2020.[6]
The Ora brand enteredEurope,Thailand,Malaysia,South AfricaandAustraliain late 2022,Brazilin 2023, andBruneiin 8 December 2023. Ora was unveiled atIndonesia International Auto Show2023 and is planned to be marketed inIndonesiain 2024.[7]
The naming of the "Cat" series vehicles is reportedly based on aDeng Xiaoping's famous quote: "No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat."[8][9]
