O Quatrilho(Portuguese pronunciation:[ukwaˈtɾiʎu]) is a 1995 Braziliandrama filmdirected byFábio Barreto.It was adapted from a José Clemente Pozenato novel bytelenovelawriter Antônio Calmon and screenwriterLeopoldo Serran.It stars famous telenovela actressesPatrícia PillarandGlória PiresandBruno Campos,who later found fame for his role asQuentin CostaonNip/Tuck.The original soundtrack was composed by classical musicianJaques Morelenbaumand the theme song by pop singer-songwriterCaetano Veloso.It was the first Brazilian film nominated for theAcademy AwardforBest Foreign Language Filmin more than 30 years, after 1962'sO Pagador de Promessas.[1]
Plot
[edit]The film follows the story of two Italian immigrant couples living in the state ofRio Grande do Sulin the early 20th century; Teresa (Patrícia Pillar) and Angelo (Alexandre Paternost) and Pierina (Glória Pires) and Massimo (Bruno Campos). While the couples struggle for survival in their new country, an unexpected love between Massimo and Teresa emerges. They fight against family and cultural traditions and head to a new destiny, leaving their partners behind.Quatrilhois the name of acard gamein which the player has to betray his partner to win. It is also a reference to thePortuguese languagewordquatro,which means four. The film was also advertised asO Qu4trilho.

Awards and nominations
[edit]Beside its Academy Award nomination, the film won three awards at theHavana Film Festival:Best Actress for Glória Pires, Best Art Direction and Best Music. Pires also won the São Paulo Association of Art Critics trophy for Best Actress for her performance in the film.
