TheOmoloy(‹See Tfd›Russian:ОмолойYakut:Омолой) is ariverinSiberia,flowing into theLaptev Seaeast of the riverLena.It is 593 kilometres (368 mi) long, and has adrainage basinof 38,900 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi).[1]Administratively the basin of the Omoloy is part of theSakha(Yakutia) administrative region ofRussia.

There is a 332,500 ha (822,000 acres)protected areain the basin of the river.[2]The now extinctBeringian steppe bisonused to have its habitat in the area of the Omoloy.[3]

Course

It flows roughly northwards across thetundraalong a valley limited by theSietinden Rangeto the west and theKular Rangeto the east. Both ranges are part of theVerkhoyansk Rangesystem. The Omoloy flows through theEast Siberian Lowlandinto theLaptev Sea.Its mouth is located in the eastern coast of theBuor-Khaya Gulf.The river freezes up in October and stays under ice until late May or early June.

Tributaries

The main tributaries of the Omoloy are the 279 km (173 mi) longKuranakh-Yuryakh,the 190 km (120 mi) longArga-Yuryakh,the 91 km (57 mi) long Bukhuruk (Бу­ху­рук) and the 98 km (61 mi) longSietinde(Сиэтиндьэ) from its left side, as well as the 159 km (99 mi) longUlakhan-Kyuegyulyurfrom the right.[4][1]
