Orchidis a bright richpurplecolorthat resembles the color which variousorchidsoften exhibit.

Various tones oforchidmay range from grayish purple to purplish-pink to strong reddish purple.

The first recorded use oforchidas a color name in English was in 1915.[1]

In 1987, orchid was included as one of theX11 colors.After the invention of theWorld Wide Webin 1991, these became known as theX11 web colors.

Derivation

The name originates from the flowers of some species of the vast orchid family (Orchidaceae), such asLaelia furfuraceaandAscocentrum pusillum,which have petals of this color.The wordOrchidderives from theGreekwordorchiswhich meanstesticle,after the appearance of the tubers of plants of the genusOrchis.[2]
