Orland Square(also referred to asOrland Square Mall) is ashopping malllocated inOrland Park, Illinois.It is the largest mall in theChicago Southland,the south and southwest suburbs ofChicago,covering an area of 1,229,884 sq ft (114,260.0 m2). It opened on March 15, 1976 and received major renovations in 1995.[3]The mall featuresJCPenney,Macy'sandVon Maur.

The mall has been a hub for commercial activity and development, driving dramatic growth in the surrounding area for the past 20 years.[4]It serves as a major retail destination for the communities ofFrankfort,Homer Glen,Mokena,New Lenox,Oak Forest,Orland Hills,Orland Park,andTinley Park.

History

Orland Square opened on March 15, 1976 withJCPenney,Marshall Field's,SearsandCarson Pirie Scott.

On July 21, 1994, a fire destroyed the Buy The Weigh candy store.[5]The next year, Orland Square would undergo a remodel.

On September 12, 2002,Hot Topic,which is located nearJCPenney,opened to customers, six days beforeWoodfield MallinSchaumburgopened.[6]In 2006, Macy's took control of theMarshall Field'slocation upon being purchased fromFederated Department StoresandMay Company.

H&Mopened in the Sears wing on November 12, 2004.[7]

Half Price Booksopened outside the mall on May 13, 2010.[8]Ruby Tuesdayclosed in 2011.[9]

Orland Square went under another renovation in 2012 that completely changed the image of the mall, with upgraded entrances, signs, floors, as well as lighting and expanded food court.[10]Dave & Buster'sopened a stand-alone location in the mall parking lot near the formerToys "R" Usin September 2012.[11]On December 5, 2012,Cheesecake Factoryofficially opened on the lower level by Macy's.[12]In January 2013,Gapwas introduced at the mall by Sears. On November 4, 2016, an entertainment center called Gizmo's Fun Factory opened along withSky Zone Trampoline Parkto the left of the nearby Carson's Furniture Gallery.[13]

In January 2018, it was announcedSearswould shutter as part of an ongoing decision to eliminate its brick-and-mortar format.[14]The previous Sears outpost has been sold to Cubework, a provider ofcoworkingspaces.[15]

On April 18, 2018, it was announcedCarson Pirie Scottand its Furniture Gallery would be shuttering after it wasn't able to establish any new conditions to satisfy its established long-term debt.[16]The previousCarson Pirie Scottoutpost was reconstructed forVon Maurwhich opened November 2, 2019, a month after theWoodland Malllocation inKentwood, Michiganopened.[17]

The same yearVon Mauropened,Texas de Brazilwould officially open on the upper level by the defunctSears.[18]

On August 20, 2020,Duluth Trading Companyopened to the left of Half Price Books.[19]

Shooting

On January 21, 2019, a shooting occurred in the mall which left one person dead and one person wounded. At approximately 6:45 p.m. CST, 19-year-old Jakharr Williams opened fire near the food court. 18-year-old Javon Britton was killed, while a bystander was grazed during the gunfire. Williams was arrested by police two days after the shooting inMatteson, Illinois.[20][21]
