Prithvi Nath Dhar(P.N. Dhar,1 March 1919 – 19 July 2012) was an Indianeconomistand the head ofIndira Gandhi's secretariat and one of her closest advisers.[2]
Early life and career
[edit]P. N. Dhar was born into aKashmiri Panditfamily[3]on 1919 to Dr. Vishnu Hakim and Radha Hakim. His wife was the singer-writerSheila Dhar.He attendedTyndale Biscoe SchoolinSrinagar,India, and then studied economics at theHindu Collegeof theUniversity of Delhi.[citation needed]
Dhar served as principal secretary to Prime MinisterIndira Gandhiduring the tumultuous days of the Emergency (1973–1977).[citation needed]He was one of her close advisors, who were collectively known as the "Kashmiri Mafia".[4]
He was also a professor of economics atDelhi Universityfor many years and the director and emeritus professor of theInstitute of Economic GrowthinNew Delhi.[citation needed]
He was one of the founders of theDelhi School of Economics.He served as theUnited Nationsassistant secretary general, research and policy analysis, in New York from 1978 to 1986.
He was awarded thePadma Vibushan,India's second highest civilian award in 2008.[citation needed]
His memoir,Indira Gandhi, the Emergency, and Indian Democracywas published in 2000.[citation needed]
