Pastavy(Belarusian:Паставы;Russian:Поставы,romanized:Postavy;Lithuanian:Pastovys;Polish:Postawy) is a town inVitebsk Region,Belarus.[1]It serves as the administrative center ofPastavy District.[1]As of 2024, it has a population of 18,618.[1]

History
[edit]Pastavy has several historic buildings including 18th-century houses and 19th-century church.[2] In 2009, Pastavy celebrated its 600th anniversary.
Within theGrand Duchy of Lithuania,Pastavy was part ofVilnius Voivodeship.In 1793, Pastavy was acquired by theRussian Empireas a result of theSecond Partition of Poland.
From 1921 until 1939, Pastavy was part of theSecond Polish Republic.In the 1921 census, 43.3% people declaredPolishnationality, 34.8% declared Jewish nationality, and 21.7% declared Belarusian nationality.[3]
In September 1939, the town wasoccupied by the Red Armyand, on 14 November 1939, incorporated into theByelorussian SSR.From 6 July 1941 until 5 July 1944, Pastavy wasoccupied by Nazi Germanyand administered as a part ofGeneralbezirk WeißruthenienofReichskommissariat Ostland.
