Paul Hilton(born 1970) is an English actor on stage, radio, and TV. He trained at theWelsh College of Music & Drama.

Biography

Hilton was born inOldham,Lancashirein 1970.[1][2]

He has starred as William Palmer in thePilgrimradio dramas onBBC Radio 4'sAfternoon Playseries and appeared in TV programmes includingGarrow's Law(as freethinker Joseph Hamer),The Bill,Silent Witness,Wire in the Blood,Midsomer Murders(in the episode "The Oblong Murders" ),Robin Hood,and has had regular character roles inTrue Dare Kiss(as Dennis Tyler) andCasualty 1909(as Henry Percy Dean).

Hilton also appeared in the filmKlimtand as Mr. Earnshaw Snr. in Andrea Arnold's 2011 adaptation ofWuthering Heights.

In 2010, he appeared as Sandy inMark Haddon's playPolar Bearsat theDonmar Warehouse,[3]and in 2011 played the title role inMarlowe'sDoctor FaustusatShakespeare's Globe.[4]In July 2015, he was part of the premiere cast ofDamon Albarn's new musicalWonder.landat theManchester International Festival.[5]For directorRufus Norrishe was The Boson inLucy Kirkwood'sMosquitoes(2017) at London'sNational Theatre.[6]

He played the character of The Fool in theDeep Time Walk Mobile Guide,produced in 2016/7 byJeremy Mortimer.[citation needed]

He appeared as Alexander, the husband of the protagonist Katherine (played byFlorence Pugh) in the 2016 filmLady Macbeth,which transposed the action of thenovelbyNikolai Leskovto the Northeast of England.

In 2017, he starred in the title role in a National Theatre Live production ofPeter Pan.[1]

He played the part of David Holmes in the television drama seriesA Very English Scandal,based uponJohn Preston'snon-fiction bookabout theThorpe affair.

In 2018, Hilton playedE.M. Forsterin the world premiere ofMatthew Lopez's playThe Inheritanceat London'sYoung Vic,reprising his role in the West End and Broadway transfers. In 2020, he received aTony Awardnomination forBest Featured Actor in a Play,aDrama League Awardnomination for Distinguished Performance, and won theDrama Desk AwardforOutstanding Featured Actor in a Playfor his performance.[7]

In 2023 and 2024, he played Father Manders inHenrik Ibsen's playGhostsin theSam Wanamaker Playhouse.[8]
