Petr Mach(born 6 May 1975) is aCzecheconomistand former Member of the European Parliament. Mach is the founder of theParty of Free Citizens,which he led until 2017 whenhe was replacedby Tomáš Pajonk.

Early career

Mach worked as an executive director of theCenter for Economics and Politicsin Prague from 1999 to 2009, and as an external economic adviser toCzech PresidentVáclav Klausfrom 2003 to 2007, with whom he shares enthusiasm for thefree marketeconomy andeuroscepticism.[1]In 2003, Mach earned aPhDfrom the Department of Monetary Theory and Policy of theUniversity of Economics, Prague.[2]

Political career

Party of Free Citizens

Mach left ODS at the end of 2007 after the party moved to a position of support for theTreaty of Lisbon.[3]He decided to form a new party on 4 December 2008, founding theParty of Free Citizensin 2009.[4]Mach was elected as a party member in 2010,[5]2012,[6]2013,[7]and 2015 Czech elections.[clarification needed][8]

In September 2010, Mach addressed theUK Independence PartyAnnual Conference and praised Václav Klaus for his opposition to the Lisbon Treaty. He addressed the party's conference again in 2014 following their victory in the2014 European Parliament election in the United Kingdom.

Resignations and departure from politics

On 10 December 2016, Mach resigned as chairman of Party of Free Citizens due to disputes about party direction,[9]but returned to the office and was re-elected party chairman on 22 January 2017.[10]

Mach announced his second resignation on 31 August 2017, this time as a member of the European Parliament,[11]stating that he wanted to fully concentrate on the campaign2017 Czech parliamentary election.[12]He was replaced by Jiří Payne.[11]Mach later resigned as party leader in October after a poor voting in the parliamentary election,[13]having finished second behindTomáš Pajonkin the subsequentleadership election.[14]In 2018, Mach decided not to run for another seat as a candidate and announced that his departure from politics.[15]

Return to politics

In 2019, Mach was announced as a member of theTricolour Citizens' Movement,and addressed their party conference inBrnothe same year in September.[16]He joinedFreedom and Direct Democracyin 2023 and became the lead candidate on the party's electoral list in the2024 European Parliament election.[17]

During the2024 European Parliament election,Mach ran as a leader SPD and Tricolor coalition candidate, having announced his candidacy in December 2023.[18][19][20]SPD movement won 5.73% and one mandate; Mach failed but MEP Ivan David won it.[21]

Political views

Mach is considered a libertarian.[22]and considers a lean state with minimal taxes to be the ideal state model.[23]He is against the adoption ofEuroin the Czech Republic.[24]

Mach is a member ofMensa Česko[cs].[25]He has been married toReflexjournalist Andrea Holopová since 2014.[26]
