phpMyAdminis afree and open sourceadministration tool forMySQLandMariaDB.As a portableweb applicationwritten primarily inPHP,it has become one of the most popular MySQL administration tools, especially forweb hosting services.[4]

Tobias Ratschiller, then anITconsultant and later founder of thesoftwarecompany Maguma, started to work on a PHP-based webfront-endto MySQL in 1998, inspired by MySQL-Webadmin. He gave up the project (andphpAdsNew,of which he was also the original author) in 2000 because of lack of time.[5]

By that time, phpMyAdmin had already become one of the most popular PHP applications and MySQL administration tools, with a large community of users and contributors. In order to coordinate the growing number ofpatches,a group of three developers (Olivier Müller, Marc Delisle and Loïc Chapeaux)[6]registeredThe phpMyAdmin ProjectatSourceForgeand took over the development in 2001.[7]

In July 2015, the main website and the downloads left SourceForge and moved to acontent delivery network.[8]At the same time, the releases began[9]to bePGP-signed.Afterwards, issue tracking moved to GitHub[10]and the mailing lists migrated.[11]Before version 4, which usesAjaxextensively to enhance usability, the software usedHTML frames.

  6. Creating PDF graphics of the database layout
  7. Creating complex queries using query-by-example (QBE)
  8. Searching globally in a database or a subset of it
  9. Transforming stored data into any format using a set of predefined functions, like displayingBLOB-data as image or download-link
  10. Live charts to monitor MySQL server activity like connections, processes, CPU/memory usage, etc.
  11. Network traffic to the SQL server
  12. Working with different operating systems like Windows*, Linux*, OS/2, Free BSD* Unix* (such as Sun* Solaris*, AIX) and others.
  13. Make complex SQL queries easier.

phpMyAdmin could be used to developadministrative systemfor letter filling, especially inbureaucracy.[13]
