Pine Castleis acensus-designated placeand unincorporated area inOrange County,Florida,United States. It is part of theOrlando–Kissimmee–Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History[edit]

Initially settled in 1870, the town's development has been shaped by that ofOrlando,approximately 5 miles (8 km) to the north. From just before 1882 theSouth Florida Railroadmainline,[4]which became part of thePlant Systemin 1893 and theAtlantic Coast Line Railroadin 1902, provided regular rapid passenger and freight service. The town officially incorporated in 1925, but later reverted to unincorporated development.[5]The population was 10,805 at the 2010 census.[6]Passenger trains operated by successorSeaboard Coast LineA Line from 1967 thenAmtrakafter 1971 bypassed the local depot, with nearest stops in Orlando andKissimmee.Passenger rail service returned with the opening ofSunRail'sSand Lake Road stationin 2014.

According to theUnited States Census Bureau,the CDP has a total area of 7.3 km2(2.8 mi2), of which 6.8 km2(2.6 mi2) is land and 0.5 km2(0.2 mi2) (7.42%) is water.

As of thecensus[2]of 2000, there were 8,803 people, 3,130 households, and 2,228 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation densitywas 1,297.3/km2(3,364.5/mi2). There were 3,302 housing units at an average density of 486.6/km2(1,262.0/mi2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 68.78%White,12.80%African American,0.86%Native American,2.58%Asian,0.20%Pacific Islander,10.24% fromother races,and 4.53% from two or more races.HispanicorLatinoof any race were 35.60% of the population.

There were 3,130 households, out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% weremarried couplesliving together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 26.9% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 33.4% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.9 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $34,448, and the median income for a family was $37,969. Males had a median income of $25,908 versus $22,019 for females. Theper capita incomefor the CDP was $16,767. About 13.3% of families and 15.0% of the population were below thepoverty line,including 21.1% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.

Industry[edit]

The name "Pine Castle" has been associated with several industrial projects. In 1925, boat manufacturerCorrect Craftfounded its original factory in Pine Castle, before constructing a larger facility in 2006.[citation needed]In the mid-1940s,Bell AircraftCorporation tested itsX-1supersonic rocket plane atPinecastle Army Airfield,because of the area's then-remote location and 10,000-foot (3,000 m) runway.[11]The airfield, located 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Pine Castle, has since becomeOrlando International Airport.

Pine Castle Elementary School was established in 1877.
