ThePlokiophilidaeorweb-loversare a small group ofinsectsbelonging to thetrue bugs(Heteroptera). Nine genera (one fossil, from Baltic amber) and 20 species are currently known.[1]

Morphology

Plokiophilidae are small (1.2-3.0 mm length) and vaguely similar toAnthocoridae.[1]

Life history

Plokiophilidae inhabit almost exclusivelyspider websof spiders from the suborderMygalomorphaeorAraneomorphae,or the webs ofEmbioptera.[1][2]

The generaPlokiophila,Plokiophiloides,LipokophilaandEmbiophilaare known to copulate throughtraumatic insemination.[2]

Distribution

Plokiophilidae are mostly documented from theNew Worldtropics and tropicalAfrica.The generaHeissophilaand the speciesParaplokiophiloides schwendingerihave been described fromThailand.Monteithophila queenslandana,described in 2015, is the first species known fromAustralia,whileMonteithophila fijiensishas been found inFiji.[2]
