Alabama(/ˌæləˈbæmə/AL-ə-BAM) is astatein theSoutheasternregion of the United States. It bordersTennesseeto the north,Georgiato the east,Floridaand theGulf of Mexicoto the south, andMississippito the west. Alabama is the30th largest by areaand the24th-most populousof the50 U.S. states.

Alabama is nicknamed theYellowhammerState,after thestate bird.Alabama is also known as the "Heart ofDixie"and the" Cotton State ". The state has diverse geography, with the north dominated by the mountainousTennessee Valleyand the south byMobile Bay,a historically significant port. Alabama's capital isMontgomery,and its largest city by population and area isHuntsville.Its oldest city isMobile,founded byFrench colonists(Alabama Creoles) in 1702 as the capital ofFrench Louisiana.Greater Birminghamis Alabama's largest metropolitan area and its economic center. Politically, as part of theDeep South,or "Bible Belt",Alabama is a predominantlyconservativestate, and is known for itsSouthern culture.Within Alabama,American football,particularly at thecollegelevel, plays a major part of the state's culture.

Originally home to many native tribes, present-day Alabama was a Spanish territory beginning in the sixteenth century until the French acquired it in the early eighteenth century. The British won the territory in 1763 until losing it in theAmerican Revolutionary War.Spain held Mobile as part ofSpanish West Floridauntil 1813. In December 1819, Alabama was recognized as a state. During the antebellum period, Alabama was a majorproducer of cotton,and widely usedAfrican Americanslave labor.In 1861, the state seceded from the United States to become part of theConfederate States of America,with Montgomery acting as its first capital, and rejoined the Union in 1868. Following theAmerican Civil War,Alabama would suffer decades of economic hardship, in part due to agriculture and a fewcash cropsbeing the main driver of the state's economy. Similar to other former slave states, Alabamian legislators employedJim Crow lawsfrom the late 19th century up until the 1960s. High-profile events such as theSelma to Montgomery marchesmade the state a major focal point of thecivil rights movementin the 1950s and 1960s. (Full article...)

Thetornado outbreak of February 28 – March 2, 2007was a deadlytornado outbreakacross thesouthern United Statesthat began inKansason February 28, 2007. The severe weather spread eastward on March 1 and left a deadly mark across the southern US, particularly inAlabamaandGeorgia.Twenty deaths were reported; one in Missouri, nine in Georgia, and 10 in Alabama. Scattered severe weather was also reported inNorth Carolinaon March 2, producing the finaltornadoof the outbreak before the storms moved offshore into the Atlantic Ocean.

In the end, there were 57 tornadoes confirmed during the outbreak, including three EF3 tornadoes reported across three states, as well as three EF4 tornadoes; two in Alabama and one in Kansas, the first such tornadoes since the introduction of theEnhanced Fujita Scale.Total damages were estimated at over $580 million from tornadoes alone, making it the fourth-costliest tornado outbreak in US history (the figure not including damage from other thunderstorm impacts includinghailandstraight-line winds). Insured losses in the state of Georgia topped $210 million, making this outbreak the costliest in that state's history.Enterprise, Alabama,which was hit the hardest, sustained damages in excess of $307 million.
