The Gibraltar Portal![]() Gibraltar(/dʒɪˈbrɔːltər/jih-BRAWL-tər,Spanish:[xiβɾalˈtaɾ]) is aBritish Overseas Territoryand city located at the southern tip of theIberian Peninsula,on theBay of Gibraltar,near the exit of theMediterranean Seainto theAtlantic Ocean(Strait of Gibraltar). It has an area of 6.8 km2(2.6 sq mi) and isbordered to the northbySpain(Campo de Gibraltar). The landscape is dominated by theRock of Gibraltar,at the foot of which is a densely populated town area, home to some 34,003 people, primarilyGibraltarians. Gibraltar was founded as a permanent watchtower by theAlmohadsin 1160. It switched control between theNasrids,CastiliansandMarinidsin theLate Middle Ages,acquiring larger strategic clout upon the destruction of nearbyAlgecirasc. 1375.It became again part of the Crown of Castile in 1462. In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forcescaptured Gibraltarfrom Spain during theWar of the Spanish Succession,and it was ceded toGreat Britainin perpetuity under theTreaty of Utrechtin 1713. It became an important base for theRoyal Navy,particularly during theNapoleonic WarsandWorld War II,as it controlled thenarrow entrance and exitto theMediterranean Sea,theStrait of Gibraltar,with half the world's seaborne trade passing through it. The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a point of contention inAnglo-Spanish relations,as Spain assertsa claim to the territory.Gibraltarians overwhelmingly rejected proposals for Spanish sovereignty in a1967 referendum,and for shared sovereignty in a2002 referendum.Nevertheless, Gibraltar maintains close economic and cultural links with Spain, with many Gibraltarians speaking Spanish as well as a local dialect known asLlanito.(Full article...) It was the 26th edition of theWorld Pool Mastersinvitational tournament organised byMatchroom Sport.The event contained increased participation from 16 to 24 players, and increased total prize fund to$100,000. SpaniardDavid Alcaidewon the event, defeating Greece'sAlexander Kazakisin the final 9–8,doublingthe final ball the length of the table to win. The reigning champion was DutchmanNiels Feijenwho defeatedShane Van Boeningof the United States in theprevious year'sfinal to win the title for the second time in his career.
