Latin Americaoften refers to the regions in theAmericasin whichRomance languagesare the main languages and the culture and Empires of its peoples have had significant historical, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural impact. It is "commonly used to describeSouth Americawith the exception ofSuriname,Guyanaand theFalkland islands,Central America,Mexico,and most of the islands of theCaribbean".In a narrow sense, it refers toSpanish AmericaandBrazil(Portuguese America). The term "Latin America" is broader thanHispanic America,which specifically refers to Spanish-speaking countries; and narrower than categories such asIbero-America,a term that refers to both Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries from the Americas, and sometimes from Europe. It could also theoretically encompassQuebecorLouisianawhere French is still spoken and are historical remnants of the French Empire in that region of the globe.

The termLatin Americawas first used inParisat a conference in 1856 called "Initiative of America: Idea for a Federal Congress of the Republics" (Iniciativa de la América. Idea de un Congreso Federal de las Repúblicas), by the Chilean politicianFrancisco Bilbao.The term was further popularized by French emperorNapoleon III's government ofpolitical strongmanthat in the 1860s asAmérique latineto justify France's military involvement in theSecond Mexican Empireand to includeFrench-speakingterritories in the Americas, such asFrench Canada,Haiti,French Louisiana,French Guiana,Martinique,Guadeloupeand the FrenchAntillean CreoleCaribbean islandsSaint Lucia,andDominica,in the larger group of countries where Spanish and Portuguese languages prevailed.

The region covers an area that stretches fromMexicotoTierra del Fuegoand includes much of theCaribbean.It has an area of approximately 19,197,000 km2(7,412,000 sq mi), almost 13% of the Earth's land surface area. ARAMorenowas adreadnoughtbattleshipdesigned by the AmericanFore River Shipbuilding Companyfor theArgentine Navy.Named afterMariano Moreno,a key member of the first independent government of Argentina, theFirst Assembly(Primera Junta),Morenowas the second dreadnought of theRivadaviaclass,and the fourth built during theSouth American dreadnought race.

Argentina placed orders forMorenoand its onlysister ship,Rivadavia,in reply to a Brazilian naval building program. During their construction, the two dreadnoughts were subject to numerous rumors involving Argentina selling the two battleships to a country engaged in theFirst World War,but these proved to be false. AfterMorenowas completed in March 1915, a series of engine problems occurred during thesea trialswhich delayed its delivery to Argentina to May 1915. The next decade saw the ship based inPuerto Belgranoas part of the Argentine Navy's First Division before sailing to the United States for an extensive refit in 1924 and 1925. During the 1930s the ship was occupied with diplomatic cruises to Brazil, Uruguay, and Europe until theSecond World Warbroke out. HIV/AIDS has been a public health concern for Latin America due to a remaining prevalence of the disease. In 2018 an estimated 2.2 million people had HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean, making the HIV prevalence rate approximately 0.4% in Latin America.

Some demographic groups in Latin America have higher prevalence rates for HIV/ AIDS including men who have sex with men having a prevalence rate of 10.6%, and transgender women having one of the highest rates within the population with a prevalence rate of 17.7%.
