North Carolina(/ˌkærəˈlnə/KARR-ə-LY-nə) is astatein theSoutheasternregion of theUnited States.It is bordered byVirginiato the north, theAtlantic Oceanto the east,South Carolinato the south,Georgiato the southwest, andTennesseeto the west. The state is the28th-largestand9th-most populousof theUnited States.Along with South Carolina, it makes up theCarolinasregion of theEast Coast.At the2020 census,the state had a population of 10,439,388.Raleighis the state'scapitalandCharlotteis itsmost populous city.TheCharlotte metropolitan area,with an estimated population of 2,805,115 in 2023, is themost populous metropolitan areain North Carolina, the22nd-most populousin the United States, and the largest banking center in the nation after New York City. TheResearch Triangle,with an estimated population of 2,368,947 in 2023, is the second-most populous combined metropolitan area in the state,31st-most populousin the United States, and is home to the largest research park in the United States,Research Triangle Park.

The earliest evidence of human occupation in North Carolina dates back 10,000 years, found at theHardaway Site.North Carolina was inhabited byCarolina Algonquian,Iroquoian,andSiouanspeaking tribes of Native Americans prior to the arrival of Europeans. King Charles II granted eight lord proprietors a colony they named Carolina after the king and which was established in 1670 with the first permanent settlement at Charles Town (Charleston). Because of the difficulty of governing the entire colony from Charles Town, the colony was eventually divided and North Carolina was established as aroyal colonyin 1729 and was one of theThirteen Colonies.TheHalifax Resolvesresolution adopted by North Carolina on April 12, 1776, was the first formal call for independence from Great Britain among the American Colonies during theAmerican Revolution.

On November 21, 1789, North Carolina became the 12th state to ratify theUnited States Constitution.In the run-up to theAmerican Civil War,North Carolina reluctantly declared itssecessionfrom theUnionon May 20, 1861, becoming the tenth of eleven states to join theConfederate States of America.Following the Civil War, the state was restored to the Union on July 4, 1868. On December 17, 1903,Orville and Wilbur Wrightsuccessfully piloted the world's first controlled, sustained flight of a powered,heavier-than-air aircraftatKitty Hawkin North Carolina'sOuter Banks.North Carolina often uses the slogan "First in Flight" on statelicense platesto commemorate this achievement, alongside a newer alternative design bearing the slogan "First in Freedom" in reference to theMecklenburg Declarationand Halifax Resolves. North Carolina Highway 231(NC 231) is a 25.4-mile-long (40.9 km) primarystate highwayin theU.S. stateofNorth Carolina.NC 231 travels throughWake County,Johnston County,andNash Countybetween its southern terminus atUS 64 BusinessinWendelland its northern terminus atUS 64 Alternate/NC 98nearSpring Hope.Throughout Wake County and Johnston County, NC 231 primarily follows a southeast-northwest alignment. Entering into Nash County, NC 231 turns to follow a northerly alignment until reaching its northern terminus. NC 231 serves the towns of Wendell,Middlesex,and Spring Hope.

NC 231 was first established in 1926 running betweenElizabethtownandDelcoinSoutheastern North Carolina.By 1929,NC 21was extended southwest along the route of NC 231 and the highway was decommissioned. Modern-day NC 231 was established in 1935, between NC 39 inEmitandUS 64west of Spring Hope. In 1948, NC 231 was extended west along its current routing to US 64 in Wendell.
