Serbia ,officially theRepublic of Serbia ,is alandlocked country at the crossroads ofSoutheast andCentral Europe, located in theBalkans and thePannonian Plain .It bordersHungary to the north,Romania to the northeast,Bulgaria to the southeast,North Macedonia to the south,Croatia andBosnia and Herzegovina to the west, andMontenegro to the southwest. Serbia claims a border withAlbania through thedisputed territory ofKosovo .Serbia has about 6.6 million inhabitants, excluding Kosovo. Its capitalBelgrade is also thelargest city .
Continuously inhabited since thePaleolithic Age, the territory of modern-day Serbia facedSlavic migrations in the 6th century, establishing several regionalstates in the early Middle Ages at times recognised as tributaries to theByzantine ,Frankish andHungarian kingdoms. TheSerbian Kingdom obtained recognition by theHoly See andConstantinople in 1217, reaching its territorial apex in 1346 as theSerbian Empire .By the mid-16th century, theOttomans annexed the entirety of modern-day Serbia; their rule wasat times interrupted by theHabsburg Empire ,which began expanding towardsCentral Serbia from the end of the 17th century while maintaining a foothold inVojvodina .In the early 19th century, theSerbian Revolution established thenation-state as the region's firstconstitutional monarchy ,which subsequently expanded its territory. In 1918, in the aftermath ofWorld War I ,theKingdom of Serbia united with theformer Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina ;later in the same year it joined with other South Slavic nations in the foundation ofYugoslavia ,which existed in various political formations until theYugoslav Wars of the 1990s. During thebreakup of Yugoslavia ,Serbia formed aunion with Montenegro ,which waspeacefully dissolved in 2006, restoring Serbia's independence as a sovereign state for the first time since 1918. In 2008, representatives of the Assembly of Kosovo unilaterallydeclared independence ,with mixed responses from the international community while Serbia continues to claim it as part of itsown sovereign territory .
Serbia is anupper-middle income economy ,ranked "very high" in theHuman Development Index domain. It is aunitary parliamentary constitutional republic ,member of theUN ,CoE ,OSCE ,PfP ,BSEC ,CEFTA ,and is acceding to theWTO .Since 2014, the country has been negotiatingits EU accession ,with the possibility of joining theEuropean Union by 2030. TheGolubac Fortress (Serbian :Голубачки град orGolubački grad ) was amedieval fortified town on the south side of theDanube River, 4 km (2.5 mi) downstream from the modern-day town ofGolubac ,Serbia .According to recent discoveries, the fortress, which was built during the 14th century byMedieval Serbian state, is split into three compounds which were built in stages. It has ten towers, most of which started square, and several of which received many-sided reinforcements with the advent of firearms. Towers were not connected for easier defense. Serbian Medieval frescos were recently found inside the fortress.
Golubac Fortress has had a tumultuous history. Prior to its construction it was the site of a
Roman settlement. During the
Middle Ages ,it became the object of many battles, especially between the
Ottoman Empire and the
Kingdom of Hungary .It changed hands repeatedly, passing between
Turks ,
Bulgarians ,
Hungarians ,
Serbs ,and
Austrians ,until 1867, when it was turned over to the Serbian
Knez ,
Mihailo Obrenović III .In the 21st century it is a popular tourist attraction in the region and a sightseeing point on Danube boat tours. (
