ThePress-Republicanis adaily newspaperpublished five days a week, Tuesday through Friday with a Saturday weekend edition inPlattsburgh, New York,United States. It is owned byCommunity Newspaper HoldingsInc., a subsidiary of the Retirement Systems of Alabama.

ThePress-RepublicancoversClinton,EssexandFranklincounties in Northeastern New York state.

Community Newspaper Holdings bought thePress-Republicanin late 2006 fromOttaway Community Newspapers,a division ofDow Jones & Company.[2]

History

The Press-Republicantraces its history to theRepublicanwith its first issue printed on April 12, 1811.[3]In October 1813, underAzariah C. Flaggit changed its name to thePlattsburgh Republican.[4]It was a weekly publication until 1916, then the paper changed its name to thePlattsburgh Daily Republicanand printed a daily edition; holidays and Sundays were the exception.[5]

Two decades earlier, on August 16, 1894, thePlattsburgh Daily Presspublished it first issue[6]For the next forty-eight years, thePlattsburgh Daily Pressand thePlattsburgh Daily Republicanwere the major print news sources for residents of the North Country.

On October 5, 1942, thePlattsburgh Daily Republicanpublished its last newspaper issue, as theDaily Pressand theDaily Republicanmerged to form thePlattsburgh Press-Republican.On October 5, 1942, thePlattsburgh Daily Pressreported about the merger that, "The Plattsburgh Daily Republican has been the Democratic paper of the county and the Plattsburgh Daily Press has been the Republican organ. The interests of both parties will be served in the new publication." ThePress-Republicanbegan printing on October 6, 1942, featuring a mixed headline with theSt. Louis Cardinalswinning theWorld Seriesand Nazis moving northwest ofStalingrad.[7]

Joe LoTemplio was appointed editor on June 29, 2019.[8]

John Celestino began serving as interim publisher on August 3, 2019.[9]
