Prlekija dialect

ThePrlekija dialect(Slovene:prleško narečje,[1]prleščina[2]) is aSlovene dialectin thePannonian dialect group.It is spoken in thePrlekijaregion, southwest of theMuraRiver, bounded on the north by a line fromRadencitoZlatoličjetoSpodnja Polskava,on the west from there toMajšperk,and then on the south along theDravinjaandDravarivers to theCroatianborder.[3][4]

Phonological and morphological characteristics

The Prlekija dialect often has short vowels corresponding to long acute vowels in the standard language. Accentual retraction (in comparison to standard Slovene) is common. The dialect does not have diphthongs and is characterized bya:>ɔ,u>ü,vocalicł>u,unaccentedě/i/u>i,word-finalm>n,hardening of softl,>j,andv>fbefore voiceless consonants and in word-final position. Salient lexemes in the dialect includedère(=ko'when'),ka(=da'that' orker'because'), andte(=tedaj'then').[3]
