TheProtaton(Greek:Πρωτάτο), also known as theDormition of the TheotokosChurch(Greek:Ναός Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου), is the main church ofKaryes, Mount Athos.It also serves as the ecclesiastical seat of theProtos,or the primate of themonastic community of Mount Athos.[1]It was founded in the early 10th century AD, prior to the completion of theGreat Lavrain 963.[2]
The Protaton is known for its various frescoes, paintings,[3]relics, and icons, particularly theAxion Estinicon. Many important manuscripts and historical documents, including the various historicaltypikonsof Mount Athos are also kept in the Protaton.[4]
