Prsnigarbha

Prsnigarbha(Sanskrit:पृश्निगर्भ,IAST:Pṛśnigarbha) is a name of theHindudeityVishnu.According to theBhagavata Purana,it is the name accorded to one of the births ofVishnu.The name is a Sanskrit compound word consisting of the termspṛśniandgarbha,literally meaning, "Pṛśni's embryo".[1]

The Prajapati Sutapa and his wife Pṛśni worshippedVishnuwith such devotion that he himself appeared before them for granting a boon. In their enthusiasm, they asked thrice, "We need a son equivalent to you". Vishnu told them that he himself would be born as their son in three differentjanmas(births).[2]He instructed the importance of the practice ofbrahmacharyato the world.

In the first janma inSatya Yuga,Vishnu was born as Prsnigarba, the son of Sutapa and Pṛśni. In the second life, during theTreta Yuga,he was born asVamana,the son ofAditiandKasyapa.In the third life, towards the end ofDvapara Yuga,he was born asKrishna,the son ofVasudevaandDevaki.[3]

According to theGuruvayurSthala Purana,the deity ofGuruvayurwas originally given to Pṛśni and Sutapa during the Satya Yuga byBrahma,and it was following the worship ofHariin his four-armed form, that Prsnigarba was born to Pṛśni and Sutapa.[citation needed]
