Apublic procurator(Chinese:Công tố nhân;[1]Kiểm sát quan[2]) is an officer of astatecharged with both the investigation and prosecution of crime. The office is a feature of acivil lawinquisitorialrather thancommon lawadversarial system.Countries such asJapan,China,Russia,IndonesiaandLithuaniaadopt the procuratorial system.

The office of a procurator is called aprocuracyorprocuratorate.[3]The terms are from Latin and originate with theprocuratorsof theRoman Empire.
