TheLatin Quarter of Paris(French:Quartier latin,IPA:[kaʁtjelatɛ̃]) is an area in the5thand the6tharrondissements of Paris. It is situated on theleft bankof theSeine,around theSorbonne.

Known for its student life, lively atmosphere, andbistros,the Latin Quarter is the home to a number of higher education establishments besides the university itself, such as:

Other establishments such as theÉcole polytechniquehave relocated in recent times to more spacious settings.

The area gets its name from theLatin language,which was widely spoken in and around the University during theMiddle Ages,after the twelfth century philosopherPierre Abélardand his students took up residence there.[1]
