40S ribosomal protein S18is aproteinthat in humans is encoded by theRPS18gene.[5][6][7]

Ribosomes, theorganellesthatcatalyzeprotein synthesis, consist of asmall 40S subunitand alarge 60S subunit.Together these subunits are composed of 4RNAspecies and approximately 80 structurally distinct proteins. This gene encodes aribosomal proteinthat is a component of the 40S subunit. The protein belongs to the S13P family of ribosomal proteins. It is located in thecytoplasm. The gene product of theE. coliortholog (ribosomal protein S13) is involved in the binding offMet-tRNA, and thus, in the initiation oftranslation. This gene is an ortholog ofmouseKe3. As is typical for genes encoding ribosomal proteins, there are multiple processedpseudogenesof this gene dispersed through the genome.[7]
