The film had its premiere in the2021 Sundance Film Festivalon January 30, 2021 in theNextsection.[4]It also screened atSouth by Southwestin March 2021, where it won the Adobe Editing Award.[5]

R#Jreceived mixed reviews from critics. Thereview aggregatorwebsiteRotten Tomatoessurveyed27 criticsand, categorizing the reviews as positive or negative, assessed 14 as positive and 13 as negative for a 52% rating. Among the reviews, it determined an average rating of 6.4 out of 10. The critics consensus reads: "R#Jrepresents an admirable attempt to updateRomeo and Juliet,but alas, its bounty is not quite as boundless as the sea. "[6]
